MORNING ROUTINE - KIM. B
Describe your morning routine and the objects that play a significant role in this. When I have to go to work, I usually set my alarm 2 hours in advance of having to leave because I have a habit of snoozing for about 30-45min after the alarm goes off. I’ve tried before to just get up when I’m supposed to but I can never help it. Lately I’ve been checking my email as soon as I wake up which generally leaves a feeling of ruining a surprise… I also use this iPhone app called ‘Sleep Cycle’ whenever I’m at home (as opposed to when I’m at Gav’s). Apparently it monitors my sleeping cycle and promises to wake me up when I’m at my lightest sleep stage. I’ve been using it for 71 days now even though I don’t think it really works but it’s part of a habit I guess.
After waking I need to drink some water, cleanse my face and brush my teeth in that order. I always do my face before my teeth because I figure I am saving time drying my face while brushing my teeth. When I lived in a different house where the bathroom and loo were in the same room, I used to sometimes do three things at once. Anyway, I don’t live there now. After this I have a shower (or not, depending on how much time I have) then continue my facial routine (cleanse, serum, base moisturiser). I get dressed, go back to the bathroom and continue my facial routine (the pause in between is to let the serum/ moisturiser sink in a little bit) with eye cream, sun block, purple base foundation to even out skin tone, and finally a little bit of foundation. Depending on mood, I sometimes keep on going with blush, loose powder and mascara. My hair is a lot less high maintenance and usually gets brushed a couple of times or I put in this leave-in treatment if it’s looking poorly.
My bathroom routine is pretty rigid and is usually the reason why I’m late to things. Recently I’ve tried washing my face with a different type of cleanser (the one I use is oil-based and has to be used on a dry face) while I’m in the shower and I think it saves time.
While I’m waiting for my moisturiser to ‘set’ I get my breakfast ready. The breakfast below is something that takes a while to prepare. It consists of earl grey tea and a few bits of toast with coconut spread and homemade cherry jam made by Dad. If I’m in a hurry this is replaced by cereal or muesli. I’m very particular about the utensils I use and it has to be this Marimekko yellow mug for tea and that Tara Shackell plate (or bowl) depending on food type. Not pictured is the knife and spoon with smiley faces on them that I always use.
I always eat breakfast in my room in front of the computer so that I can read my blogs while I eat. This is another reason why I am late to things but it’s so part of my routine I couldn’t ever give it up.
