Are there any things you collect?

I’ve just unpacked a sea container full of things that forced me to question my insatiable desire to collect china and artworks…

I have also realised that I’m very interested in collections of things and how they are presented. Three of the very few photos I took while I was on holidays were a series of similar objects presented in art-full ways.

The first two were of window displays in a hardware shop. The first of pliers and the second of cogs or metal cuttings. The third photo was taken in Cognac in a cognac making castle. The implements are for tapping the barrels (I think)

I also bought a book called Objectivity or something like that (and I didn’t realize until now that it is related to your project or even related to my interest in groups of tools and implements. I also just realised that I like to curate my possessions and have done so my entire life. One of the objectives of the boxes that your dad and I made was that they should display groups of things in the best possible way; the size of the holes in the sides and the colour of the dividers.

These considerations have become so much a part of my life that I don’t even notice myself doing it anymore. However, it does influence what I find irritating in other peoples houses; like pictures displayed without thought for position, negative space and relationship to other objects in the vicinity. I guess that’s what is meant by a critical sensibility. More critic than sense!

What objects do you miss most while you are away? My giant gold picture frame on my wall and my misshapen fit-ball that morphed from being too close to the heater.

What is on your list of things to take regardless of destination or purpose? Things to take on trip, like a holiday, would have to be all the electronic essentials for entertainment, iPod, earphones, iPod charger, phone charger, portable speakers, probably wouldn’t take my laptop though, maybe my Netbook instead with TV shows and movies loaded to kill time. All the getting ready essentials like shower stuff, shampoo, conditioner, loofah, soap, mousse, hair oil, hair dryer and hair straightener, face wash, toothbrush, toothpaste. Then make up like foundation (I have to take a darker foundation if I’m going somewhere sunny because I tan easily), blush/bronzer, brown eyeshadow, black mascara, black pencil eyeliner, and red lipstick. Then the trip duration’s worth of clothes and underwear.

Besides your keys, wallet or phone, what items can you not leave home without? I can’t leave home without my cigarettes, my lighter, my card wallet with my concession card, student card, library card and metcard in it, and my Oralife because I get dry lips. My card wallet is really cute, my friend Alana brought it back from Israel for me. It’s by an artist that recycled a chip packet into the card wallet. It has a picture of a baby on it and some Hebrew writing that I don’t understand but it has sentimental value to me now.

What objects do you miss most while you are away? I miss my dog Reggie. Even every day when I go out, I usually can’t wait to get home and see my dog Reggie, he is so beautiful and makes me happy no matter what shitty day I’ve had. He’s like a child and I’m his mum, that’s the kind of relationship we have. It’s so funny because when I get home he literally puts his arms around my neck like he’s giving me a hug. So cute!

What is on your list of things to take regardless of destination or purpose? This is broken up into handbag items and overnight bag items…

Handbag: Phone, keys, wallet, papaya ointment, bobby pins, sunglasses, compact mirror, one brightly coloured lipstick

Overnight bag: underwear, pajama pants and baggy t-shirt, socks ( just in case my feet get cold- not so much in summer), basic toiletries; deodorant, facial cleanser and moisturiser, mascara, brush on mineral makeup ( easy to put on without proper mirrors etc), sunscreen in summer and a comb.

Besides your keys, wallet or phone, what items can you not leave home without? “Lucas’ Papaw Ointment” I start to twitch if I can’t moisturise my lips with this.

What objects do you miss most while you are away? My coffee machine and coffee cup, latex pillow and my mattress.

Besides your keys, wallet or phone, what items can you not leave home without? These are usually the only 3 items that I always make sure I have with me whenever I leave my house. The only other object would perhaps be a bag where I can store these items.

What objects do you miss most while you are away? My bed, fluffy pillows and clean pillows cases - the comfort of being home, knowing that everything is nice and clean. I usually feel a little uncomfortable when I sleep on beds at accommodations, not knowing what or who has been sleeping there.

What is on your list of things to take regardless of destination or purpose? I don’t really have a list, I wish I did, but when it comes to packing I’m very disorganized unless its a particularly exciting destination. Rather than a list there is a lot of grabbing, grab a couple of pairs of undies, grab some t-shirts, skirts ect, then move to the bathroom and grab what ever seems of importance of my bath room counter (basic makeup, toothbrush, toothpaste, i always forget shower stuff because its in another area and always end up buying that stuff at the location). The last thing I always pack is my laptop and charger. I cant be without my laptop. Scary.

Besides your keys, wallet or phone, what items can you not leave home without? Laptop & charger.

What do you miss most while you are away? Wifi if there is none. My pillow and bed, no matter how cushy the location is, I never sleep amazingly.

Oops I really do come across as a bit of a nerd, but I love my laptop.

For cleanliness and to keep the OCD at bay: Face wash, toothbrush and toothpaste, undies, deodorant

Comfort items: Sunglasses, tissues, lip gloss, pen and paper, moisturiser, pillow, a bag

What is on your list of things to take regardless of destination or purpose? Keys, phone, wallet.

If I will be away from home for the day I am likely to take a water bottle and a snack (ie. muesli bar) if I know I won’t be able to buy kosher food somewhere.

Unless it’s boiling hot in the middle of summer, I will always take a jacket or some sort if I am out for the day (as Melbourne always gets cold in the evening!)

Besides your keys, wallet or phone, what items can you not leave home without? My wedding and engagement rings (always make sure they are on my finger before I leave the house).

What objects do you miss most while you are away? My laptop (that’s if I don’t take it away)… hmm cannot think of anything sentimental. I think I’d just miss home. I like being in my own space - and my home is set up the way I like it. I like the convenience of having everything there.

Do you have a favourite animal? Do I have to only pick one?
I have had an obsession with owls since childhood - in fact tore every picture of owls out of every library book at my (wait for it) high school library…and kept them in a file for years. Also used to collect owls. My favourite book as a child was Dr Owls Party - I have attached a photo. I still have my well sticky-taped copy in the bookcase. There was also a show called Owly School on TV when I was little. My attraction to them was once obsessive, and weird because we never had any around us in the areas I grew up - I think the owl is my totem, and harkens back to my ancestry - some ancient Anglo-Celtic something embedded in my DNA.

Do you have a favourite animal? 2 years ago I wasn’t really a big fan of pigs, or at least I didn’t really think they were adorably cute (the adults anyway), the way I did say puppies or other furry babies. But after doing my research, which involved having to commission 21 of them to be slaughtered for my work, I feel entirely indebted to them (as I should be). After washing, dressing and naming each I’ve come to respect them, and see the inherent beauty of their species. Chosen because of their close anatomical configuration to humans, but my pigs were not merely imitation humans, but individual organisms, each requiring their own careful attention, respect and dignity.

I am particularly fond of their noses! I can’t believe such a sensitive and seemingly fragile skin is responsible for such chaos when then go rooting around.

I will often wander over to animal farms at markets and such to check out if there are any piglets. You can usually hear their grunting and squealing from afar. But after the most recent swine flu epidemic, there was a reduction in pigs been shown. It’s been really disappointing, because as much as the chooks and goats are sweet, I really just want to hold a little piggy.

At the Flower and Garden show this year I went to the animal farm at the end of the day, just after all the animals were tucked away for the evening, but enquired as to if there were any piglets…. The girl working there asked if they were my favourite animals, I told her a bit about my research and she immediately went ‘Ahhh…. You must be Pia, Sonia’s sister’…. Apparently I have a reputation as being the ‘Pig Lady’.

Do you have a favourite animal? As a species I find felines to be cleaner and less needy, but some dogs are almost human when you get to know them.

I have had a bad run of cats lately, but my favourite animal in the world ever was my cat Osbourne. He was an attractive brown tabby who weighed 7 kilos at his prime, and 11 kilos when he was old, obese and partly lame. He was mean and grumpy but was my constant companion in my teenage years.

My second favourite animal in the world ever was my next cat Lilly. She was the friendliest cat I have ever met. Through her, I met a neighbour who has become a very dear friend.

One of my current favourite animals a canine old lady called Flood who is smart, loyal and still playful.

The other one is a six year old kelpie cross called William. He is lean and black and shiny and when I visit him he goes in to an unparallelled joyful frenzy.

I have recently acquired my own black kelpie puppy, Lotte, who is cute, but all puppies are cute. In a year’s time she may be my favourite animal.

What is on your list of things to take regardless of destination or purpose? iPod, lip balm and mirror… My iPod works as a mirror too.

What objects do you miss most while you are away? My slippers, I hate being bare foot in an unfamiliar environment but they’re too bulky to justify having them take up space in my luggage so I take thongs instead – versatile enough to wear around the house as well as down to the beach etc. They’re just not the same.

Possibly a little off track, but I also need to wear socks to bed. Even in summer.
